The 53rd Week leadership team is multidisciplinary and hails from across the continent, and consists of thought leaders with a diversity of experiences in teaching, evaluating, and assessing the phenomenon of volunteering abroad.

Henry Lin, MD, MBA

Executive Director

Henry is a pediatric hepatologist at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia with an interest in healthcare advocacy and community development. His international experiences in public health and primary care along with previous stints on the board of a community center providing child development programs and the Governing Council of the American Medical Association- Resident Fellow Section have helped develop his passion for improving access to care for marginalized populations.  As an educator, Henry enjoys mentorship and working with young professionals of tomorrow.  Henry received his BA in Communications and MD from the University of Missouri-Kansas City.  In his spare time, he enjoys traveling, eating Taiwanese food, barefoot running, fencing, and ceramics.

Lawrence Loh, MD, MPH

Director of Advocacy and Partnership

A graduate of the Schulich School of Medicine at the University of Western Ontario in Canada, Lawrence completed residency training at the University of Toronto and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He is dual board certified in family medicine and public health and preventive medicine, mixing urgent care practice with research and advocacy interests in global health workforce planning and training. Having worked on projects in numerous countries, he brings to The 53rd Week a commitment to making global health experiences viable and valuable for everyone involved: the communities abroad, the participating organizations, and the passionate young professionals. In his spare time he enjoys running marathons, writing, traveling and spending time with friends, playing his piano and guitar, and karaoke.

Jasveen Rattan, MA, PhD

Director of Research and Evaluation

Jasveen attained both her PhD in Recreation and Leisure Studies-Tourism Policy, and Masters in Tourism Policy and Planning, at the University of Waterloo.  She has a vast background in tourism policy and planning, hospitality management, research and critical appraisal, stakeholder analysis, program evaluation  and project management.

Jasveen's expertise lies in the areas of volunteer tourism, corporate social entrepreneurship, corporate social responsibility, social entrepreneurship, tourism certification, and responsible community development.  She has conducted research,and presented, in both international and domestic settings .  Jasveen has travelled to over 50 countries, and these experiences have lent to her passion for being involved in creating more responsible initiatives and sustainable solutions for organizations.

Jasveen also attained a Bachelors of Applied Management in Hospitality and Tourism from the University of New Brunswick, and a Diploma in Hospitality Management from Humber College.  In her spare time she enjoys traveling, volunteering, running, taking musical theatre and improv classes.

Chang-Berm Kang

Director of Development

Chang-Berm Kang is a pharmaceutical marketing executive with over nine years in business development in the healthcare space. Based on his work experience in global pharmaceutical communications, he has developed a strong interest in global healthcare and its equitable delivery to all populations. He is also committed to the cause of flexible and more efficient management of organizations in the non-profit sector. He received his BA in Neuroscience from the Johns Hopkins University.

Shu-Wai Chow

Director of Technology

Shu-Wai Chow has worked in computer programming and information technology for over fifteen years. His experience has spanned a variety of industries in companies of various sizes from startups to Fortune 100 companies.  He has a wide knowledge of open source technologies and languages, and centers his career around backend web layers and data engineering.  Shu-Wai has also volunteered his expertise for many animal welfare non-profits.  He is currently a web engineer at Vertive in Austin, Texas.

A named inventor on two patents, Shu-Wai has published two books on programming.  He holds a Bachelors degree in Economics from Rutgers University, and is currently pursing a Masterss in Applied Statistics from Texas A&M University. 

Born in the British Crown Colony of Hong Kong, Shu did most of his alleged growing up in Palo Alto, California. He lives in Austin, Texas with his veterinarian wife and a lot of animals.

Karyn Singer, MD, MPH

Senior Advisor, Programs

Karyn is a primary care physician and part of the interim leadership team at Gouverneur Health, part of New York City’s Health and Hospitals System and an affiliate of NYU.  There, she also serves as the ACO lead physician and participates in multipie population health initiatives and programs.  She completed a residency in internal medicine from NYU and a second residency in preventive medicine from Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, and is double-boarded in both of these fields.   She worked briefly at McKinsey & Co prior to coming back to NYU, and is interested in building systems that streamline care, with a focus on underserved populations, both domestically and abroad.  Outside of work, she enjoys traveling, eating, running, and spending time with friends and family.

Morgan Martin, MScM

Senior Advisor, Alumni and Advancement

Morgan Martin is the Associate Director of Development and Volunteer Engagement Dell Medical School, University of Texas at Austin. She has almost a decade of higher education experience, ranging from admissions and student services to alumni relations. Morgan manages several mentoring programs, current student engagement, and alumni engagement events around the globe, among many other things.

Kristine Fernandez

Associate Director of Technology (Website Development and Design)

Kristine graduated from the University of Texas in Austin with a Bachelors degree in civil engineering. Having dabbled in web design and development as a hobby, she never really considered taking it up as a career path until one day she figured, Why not? She applied to several internships and upon graduating was hired as a junior developer, was promoted, and the rest, as they say, is history. Kristine currently works as a full-time web developer a TradeMark Media in Austin, TX where she prides herself in creating sustainable, accessible code.

Outside of the office, she enjoys eating at Austin's food trucks, adding monsters to old thrift store paintings, and listening to podcasts.
